No More Gender Restrictions for Singaporean Paternity!

Singapore’s paternity policy has always been a major concern for parents. In the past, only female relatives such as mothers, grandmothers and grandfathers could apply for a companion pass to legally enter and stay in Singapore to accompany their children under the age of 16.
Now, the good news is that the Immigration Department of Singapore has updated its paternity policy to allow male relatives such as fathers, grandfathers and grandmothers to apply for a paternity pass!
Who are the people who can apply for a paternity visa?
The child must be a legally enrolled full-time student in Singapore with a legal Singapore student visa.

The child is aged 3-16 years old

The child’s Student’s Pass category should include eligibility to allow dependents to apply for a Companion Pass: Singapore government schools, government self-governing and autonomous schools are eligible; Sam Yuk Primary and Secondary School and St. Francis Methodist School are the only private schools eligible to apply for a Student’s Pass for their students; international schools that have been awarded the Council for Private Education’s (CPE) EduTrust are eligible to apply. Accredited international schools are eligible to apply

Only one parent may apply for a Student Pass for each student. (No matter how many children in a family are studying in Singapore, the number of relatives who can be granted a Companion Pass is still limited to one)

A Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident (aged 21 or above) is required to act as a sponsor.

Validity of the Companion Pass: 1 year, which needs to be renewed every year until the child turns 16 or the Student’s Pass expires.

Approval Time: As long as the applicant submits all the necessary documents and meets the requirements, his/her application will be processed within six weeks.

Special Reminder
Part-time courses and evening or weekend courses are not eligible for Student Pass application. For example, most private schools, preparatory courses, language schools, etc., cannot apply for a student pass for their students because they do not meet the definition of a full-time course.

If your child transfers to another school, you will need to reapply for a Student Pass.

When choosing a school, make sure that the school is qualified to apply for a student pass for the student.
